Tinashe
Nightride (2016)
RCA Records/Sony Music Entertainment

Since releasing her debut album, Tinashe has traveled around the world and met us for a quick interview after the show in Berlin last year. She claimed that R&B had a long way to go to dominate Top 40 at the time. That hypothesis happened to come true because The Weeknd constantly achieves no.1 spots with pop productions. Unfortunately, true R&B is a niche in our modern world that is ruled by hip hop, EDM and pop. The new mixtape by Los Angeles native is a perfect example of that.
Kachingwe created a bubble where a powerful woman lives – she’s independent, brave and free. The Nightride’s lyrics are based on this freedom. Production side sticks to Tinashe’s style, though it’s by various names. The beats are hazy but three-dimensional at the same time and cozy (as usual). 23-year old vividly manages to connect modern R&B with trap what blossoms to, i.e. „Ride of Your Life”. She could also be a decent pop singer as we heard before in such bangers as „2 On” or „All Hands on Deck”. These guaranteed her a lot of radio time. This time we have only one single called „Company” which sound is cloudless. All the other songs are moody and remind us of Kachingwe’s early mixtapes circa 2012. The most sensual and enchanting songs on Nightride are „Lucid Dreaming” and „C’est La Vie” but I would lie, though, if I told you that these are the only steamy ones. It’s coherent and shadowy as a whole. We are glad that the producers who cooperate with Tinashe believed her vision and shared it, too. Tinashe’s most recent record is a playlist made especially for a long trip, sensual dance in the dark or your perfect date. It’s filled with perfect ballads and bed-ready songs.
The release of the second album was postponed multiple times, which resulted in the Nightride mixtape first. Thanks to that fact, we’ve received a raw, original and mysterious Tinashe that we’ve known for a few years now. This is a great piece of art.
